The project encompasses several disciplines:photography, videos and installations designed in situ with objects found in Brussels. Ballen’s very particular aesthetic stages animals, persons, real against unreality, drawings, spaces, chaos and life after death in a rarely universe recognisable amongst thousands. He elaborated his work during decades in the land of the Springbok where his originally documentary approach evolved towards fiction. His videos, including I fink U freeky, made for emblematic South-African group Die Antwoord, enjoyed millions of views on Internet. His videos all demonstrate a social commitment and fascination for unusual persons. Over the past few years, Roger Ballen started experimenting with 3D photography to be closer than ever to photographed reality. His installations are based on the spaces he photographed and recreated in the cities that he visits to show his work. Another evolution in his work is colour. Well-known for his black and white photographs, the artist launched into digital photography, a medium that opens new creative horizons hovering between reality and fiction and underlined by an honest and brutal artistic vision where truth and emotion, fiction and imagination amalgamate to shock.
