The artist has developed a mythical world inspired by the tragic history of the Middle Passage, the slave route across the Atlantic that saw the drowning of millions of Africans over several centuries. In recent work, made for New Orleans, a city still recovering from the hurricane that flooded it and drove away large parts of its population - she explores how 20th century urban planning was devised not only to maintain racial boundaries but to further subjugate Black communities. Gallagher has divided her time between the US and the Netherlands for many years. The exhibition at WIELS will present solo works of the artist and the film installation Highway Gothic created with the Dutch artist Edgar Cleijne.
